The category launched in 2016 with a smartwatch translation of two iconic Michael Kors platforms—Bradshaw and Dylan. For the second-generation watch, the brand was looking for a new design created specifically for the technology, focused on functionality for the user, and proudly using the Kors design DNA. Previous to this case, crystals on the bezel were not possible—as the most iconic element of Michael Kors watches—I worked closely with the engineering team to execute a case design both appropriate for the brand but one that would also not interrupt the functionality of the smart features or the production lines. This was crucial to the success of Michael Kors Access. Fitting with the fashion brand, it was important the Sofie watch easily switch between a metal bracelet, leather strap, silicone wrapped bracelet or more. For this, we developed a unique quick-release pusher design that also informed the shape of the watch. The Sofie watch is a true example of form follows function. Paired with a unique bracelet design with a subtle feminine twist on the traditional 3-link watch bracelet, Sofie proudly owns the DNA of Michael Kors and has since become a top-performing smartwatch. Notes &amp; Anecdotes 1 The first Michael Kors smartwatch to be developed ground-up to be smart. Non-embarrassing, even pride inducing, canes are already available—for this reason, I focused on a walker design that could do the same while also solving other daily-use issues with existing walkers. Inspired by tents, camping chairs, and luxury strollers, I developed a walker that can be easily transported and stored and has the style of sporting equipment instead of elder-care medical-ware. My hope was this form could excite and inspire the user to be more active and create a sense of pride in their device instead of embarrassment. I was happy to hear the users I shared the design with agreed. Michael Kors smartwatches run on Wear OS by Google, but so do many competitor watches. For this reason it was very important to create custom on-watch apps and faces to set the platform apart from others and creative a fully branded Michael Kors experience. The user-set watch face is the most viewed and used screen on the watch. Currently the Michael Kors Access platforms carries 65 unique face designs with infinite customization options on each. Additionally there are 5 unique apps to further the Michael Kors experience each highlighting a different core part of the brand. All watch faces were created by our team in-house. Some apps were created in-house while others were co-created with an outside agency. Notes &amp; Anecdotes 1 The category launched with 27,325,661 possible dial customization combinations. Now, with the addition of more dials and features, there are now an infinite number of combinations. &nbsp; 2 As a brand new category all systems were built from scratch with a forward-thinking, sustainable mindset. Interface design practices, animation, and more were all researched and self-taught on the job.Designers&nbsp; 3&nbsp;At the beginning of this process I was the sole designer from concept to execution, as the category progressed the team grew. While still actively designing, my resposibilities broadened and I took on a creative lead role. Here is a small snapshot of the seasonal CMF (color, material, finish) &amp; trend direction boards I created for the Michael Kors womens watch line as well as a few detailed CMF executions. Please contact me for more details. Notes &amp; Anecdotes 1 I lost count of how many of my watch designs have gone to production. On last count, Feb 2016, I had designed 20 brand-new cases resulting in 159 SKUs + 17 updates/95 SKUs for Michael Kors. Plus another 2 case/5 SKUs for Tory Burch. Château de Chamarande Completed during my semester studying at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) along side another student studying in Paris for the semester from Milan, Andrea, and a student of ENSAD, Murielle. This experience taught me respect for a more traditional and artistic approach to design that I have held dear to me since. The University of Cincinnati’s DAAP program teaches a very practical and technical approach to design, while valuable I wouldn’t be the designer I am today without my time spent at ENSAD. DAAP taught me the technical skills while ENSAD allowed me to recognize the importance of the heart in design. Before breaking out into our groups, our process started as an entire studio with days of familiarizing ourselves with the environment until it was internalized. We spent an entire day painting chips to color match items from the grounds, then another matching them digitally, and refining for print. We picnicked on the château grounds, and once the design work got rolling we never missed a break for lunch—a group trip to the market, home cooking at someones apartment and a bottle of wine before returning to the studio to complete the days work. Notes &amp; Anecdotes&nbsp; 1 Originally inspired by an artichoke, in 2020 I reworked the project to tell a more clear story with reference to the pine cone. A similar metaphor but with a deeper connection to the way the roof reacts with nature. 2 A group project completed by 3 industrial design students from 3 different schools and countries. &nbsp; 3 The architectural program held a protest against their participation in this studio due to the precedent that the final school year should be focused fully on their thesis, thus, this project was completed soley by industrial design students - sympathetic to the cause and excited by the challenge.
